What is IoT and its applications
What if your refrigerator complained about how its condenser has gone wrong or TV in your have telling you that it is time you changed remote control batteries? You probably won’t believe it if we told you that. In a few years, maybe you will believe because the concept of IoT is taking spawning faster than ever.
So when we say IoT, we mean Internet of Things, which is still not quite self-explanatory, despite the entire hint in its name. So let us discuss at what exactly the IoT is.
“Internet of Things is the Future”
Internet of Things is a network of physical devices like refrigerators, TV, traffic signals, mobile phones etc., which share data over a while with the help of sensors, software and electronic chips. The data collected from the IoT devices is then processed and used in purposes that may individually or cumulatively be used to fabricate custom experiences for everyone.
Working of IoT – Explained with an example
Let us say you broke a tray in a refrigerator in your home, which is equipped with IoT sensors and electronic chips. Now your usual reaction would be outright panicky, but then this refrigerator is smarter than you. It will initiate an autonomous sequence, which is the fastest way of resolving the issue here. Let’s take a look at the sample sequence here.
The IoT sensors will sense the broken part, generate the data and send it to the data centre where it can be analyzed and processed. Now, this processed data will be used in two ways: for the consumer and for the manufacturer.
For the consumer, the processed data is going to be used for support purpose. Since the IoT network has been notified about the refrigerator’s condition, the service agencies with IoT integration would also be notified about the same.
In response to that, the service providing industries would send you service suggestions, price estimate, availability of the part and whatever information would be relevant for you, on your Smartphone probably through a mobile app, since it is also integrated with the network. From here, you can choose whatever deal seems the most feasible for you.
So, let’s say you went with agency A. Your Smartphone will register a request with Agency A and show you payment options for the purchase. Once the transaction completes, your Smartphone will receive notifications regarding date of delivery of the part, its price, billing information, etc., and in due time, you will undergo the part.

For the manufacturer, the processed big data has a much bigger function. As the manufacturer’s system would receive information from you and many others like you, it will tally its inventory to check whether the parts are in surplus or not. If not, it will update its list.
In addition, if any complaints are received for the same role, the manufacturer would try to track the origin of the issue, which is probably in the manufacturing process of that particular part. Once the problem is identified, the IoT networks will notify the manufacturer to call off the entire faulty device from the shelves or households of the worldwide market, before they cause any trouble.
This helps enterprise render better satisfaction among the customers, maintain inventory surplus and much more.
Real World Applications of IoT
Applications of IoT are numerous for the simple fact that it is part of the digital spectrum of technologies that we come across every day; however, of a much bigger magnitude. Also, as the basic underlying technology in IoT is connectivity, IoT devices can be integrated with almost anything that is electrically powered.
Although most of the mobile app developers and innovators are looking for ways for mainstream integration of IoT with smart as well as the existing devices, IoT is already widely used in this digital world in some of the major technological areas.
In Medicine and Healthcare, IoT along with Artificial Intelligence, is already being used for maintaining drugs surplus and patient-specific services. According to a survey, more than 65% of enterprises are already using IoT to handle their operations and supply chain management..
In the field of fitness, IoT integration is relatively a new trend, but is being explored in numerous ways such as heartrate-based health suggestions, instant health reports, effective monitoring of patients. According to a survey, IoT in Healthcare is going to grow up to $117 million by 2020.
Wearables
Wearables have got an enormous demand in the worldwide market. Multi National Companies like Samsung and Google have spent heavily in developing such kind of devices.
For examples, Fitbit and Smartwatches are connected to the Internet as part of Internet of Things.
Wearable devices will be installed with software and sensors that collect all the information about users. This collected data is then pre-processed to gather the necessary insights about the user.
These devices cover a wide range of healthcare, entertainment and fitness needs. It will provide heart rate-based health suggestions, instant health reports for people, active monitoring of patients.
Healthcare
In Healthcare and Medicine, IoT along with Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning, is already being used for maintaining drugs surplus and patient-specific services.
IoT applications can transform into proactive wellness-based systems from reactive medical-based systems. Research shows that IoT will be huge in healthcare for years to come. It is empowering people to live healthier lives by wearing IoT connected devices in the health care sector.

The resources used by current medical research do not contain complex real-world information. This technology mostly uses volunteers for leftover information, medical examinations and controlled environments. IoT will open avenues for valuable data collection through analysis, testing and real time field data.
The Internet of Things will enhance the current connected devices in accuracy, power and availability. The main focus of IoT is to create systems rather than just smart devices.
Smart Cities
Smart City is a powerful real world application of the Internet of Things that can excite the global population. Automated transportation, Smart surveillance, water distribution, smart energy management systems, environmental monitoring, and urban security are some of the top examples of IoT smart cities.
IoT solves several issues faced by people living in cities with traffic congestion, pollution, and power supply shortages. Cellular communication enabled products to send alerts to smart belly trash municipal services.
By using web applications and installing sensors, citizens can find free parking slots throughout the city. In addition, the sensors can detect common faults, meter tampering problems, and any installation problems in the electrical system.
Supply Chain
Supply chains have been smarter for years already. According to a survey, more than 65% of companies are already using IoT to handle their industrial operations and supply chain management. Tracking location when goods are on the way and obtaining suppliers to transfer inventory data have been on the global market since long. So while it’s certainly logical that this thing is getting a new notification with IoT, its popularity so far is limited.
Agriculture
Agriculture is absolutely an overlooked business context for the Internet of Things since it doesn’t fit into various well-known communities, including mobility, industrial and health.
However, the far-reaching nature of the agricultural activity and the large number of livestock being monitored by the Internet of Things can revolutionize the process farmers will work. But, this brilliant has not yet to come to the world on a large scale.
Final Words
The future of the ‘Internet of Things’ is very bright, where millions of things are talking to each other, and human intervention is minimal. IoT brings a macro change in the way we live and work. There is a wide range of industries where IoT can be impacted. Most of the above-mentioned innovations already exist to one extent or another.
One thing is for sure: no going back at all. Internet of Things does not overlook any industry with unprecedented control and efficiency.
